What is a Leader?

What is a leader?

Guide, teacher, coach, visionary, role model…

Leaders are all of these things. The questions for you are…

“Do you want to be one?”
“If so, where in your life do you see yourself growing as a leader?”

I have been thinking about all the times I have been a leader in my life…it started when I got my classmates to sign a petition in 3rd grade so that those of us in the 3rd/4th grades combination class could all play together on the playgrounds which were split as 1st through 3rd and 4th and 5th grades respectively on each of the two playgrounds. While we were ultimately unsuccessful, I believe my greatest accomplishment as a leader in this situation was not getting the petition going or even getting my classmates behind it. Rather my greatest accomplishment was the loyalty to my “followers” when I refused special permission for myself only to play on the 4th/5th grades playground.

I tell this story not to toot my own horn but to show that leadership does not mean success in every venture but rather requires commitment and humility to the cause and to the people working with you towards that cause.

I believe there are 5 characteristics important to leaders, particularly for women:

  • Courage
  • Compassion
  • Self-awareness
  • Integrity
  • Humility

The question is, in my situation, did I exhibit all of these? Do you always have to hit all five? Thoughts anyone?
